Instagram surfaces images in several different crops depending on placement — square in the grid, 4:5 in feed, full-screen in stories. Starting from the recommended dimensions for each format reduces crop surprises and compression artifacts.

Because Instagram compresses aggressively, composition matters as much as resolution. Large subjects, restrained text, and breathing room near edges survive the platform best.
