Shopify Product Image Sizes: A Complete Guide (2026)

Getting your Shopify images right is the difference between a product page that converts and one that looks like a dropshipping afterthought. Here is every dimension you need, why they matter, and how to get them right the first time.

The short answer: 2048 x 2048 pixels

Shopify's official recommendation for product images is 2048 x 2048 pixels, square. This gives you enough resolution for zoom functionality to work well on desktop, while keeping the file manageable. Square images also display consistently across every theme without awkward cropping.

If you are shooting vertical products like bottles or dresses, you can go with 2048 x 2560 (4:5 portrait) — but be aware that some themes will crop back to square in collection grids. When in doubt, square is the universal safe bet.

Theme-specific considerations

Not every Shopify theme treats images the same way. Dawn (the default free theme) uses adaptive aspect ratios that respect your original image dimensions. But many premium themes — Impulse, Prestige, Symmetry — enforce specific crop ratios in collection grids and featured product sections.

Before uploading a full product shoot, test with 2-3 images first. Check the collection page, the product page, the cart page, and any homepage sections that pull product images. Pay particular attention to how the theme handles the collection grid: some crop to square, others crop to portrait, and a few let you choose in theme settings.

If your theme crops to a specific ratio, shoot and edit your product photos with that ratio in mind. Centering the product in the frame with breathing room on all sides gives you the best result regardless of how the theme crops.

Mobile vs desktop display

Over 70% of Shopify traffic is mobile. On phone screens, product images typically fill the full viewport width — roughly 390px on a modern iPhone. But because of Retina displays (2x and 3x pixel density), Shopify actually serves images at 2x or 3x that logical width. That means your 2048px-wide image is doing real work on mobile, not just desktop.

The product image zoom feature on desktop requires even higher resolution to look crisp. If you serve a 1000px image, the zoom will look blurry. At 2048px, zoom shows genuine detail — thread texture on fabric, grain on wood, finish on metal. This is where image quality directly affects conversion rate.

File size and format best practices

Shopify accepts JPG, PNG, GIF, and WebP up to 20 MB per image. But "accepted" and "recommended" are different things. For product photography, target 200-500 KB per image after compression. This keeps page load times fast without sacrificing visible quality.

JPG is the default choice for product photos. At quality 85-90%, you get excellent detail with reasonable file size. Avoid going below 80% — banding and artifacts become visible on smooth surfaces like skincare packaging or jewelry.

PNG is necessary when you need transparency — product images on white or transparent backgrounds for mockups, or logos. But PNG files are significantly larger. A 2048x2048 PNG can easily hit 5-8 MB. Only use PNG when transparency is genuinely required.

WebP delivers 25-35% smaller files than JPG at equivalent visual quality. Shopify's CDN automatically converts and serves WebP to browsers that support it, so even if you upload JPG, many visitors will receive WebP. That said, uploading WebP directly gives you more control over the compression settings.

Use TinyResize's compression tool to dial in file size before uploading, or convert between formats to find the best balance for your specific images.

Product photography sizing tips

Shoot at the highest resolution your camera allows, then resize down to 2048px. Downscaling from a large original produces sharper results than upscaling a small image. If you are shooting on a phone, most modern smartphones already capture at 4000px+ on the long edge — more than enough.

For consistency across your catalog, create a Photoshop or Lightroom template at your target dimensions with guides showing the safe area. This is especially important if your theme crops images — you need to know where the crop edges fall before you shoot, not after.

Batch processing is your friend. Shoot an entire product line, then resize everything at once to your target dimensions. This keeps your collection pages looking uniform and saves hours compared to editing images one at a time.
