E-commerce Product Image Sizes: Amazon, eBay, Etsy, Poshmark, Depop, and Shopify

Product photography is the closest an online shopper gets to touching your item. The right image dimensions ensure your photos display sharply, enable zoom features, and meet marketplace requirements that can make or break your listing's visibility. Each platform has different rules — Amazon demands white backgrounds, Etsy encourages lifestyle styling, and Poshmark has its own square crop. This guide covers image specifications for six major e-commerce platforms organized by type: large marketplaces, fashion and resale apps, and self-hosted storefronts. Whether you sell handmade goods, vintage fashion, or branded products, you will find the exact dimensions and format requirements here.

Large Marketplaces

Amazon, eBay, and Etsy are the three largest product marketplaces, and each has strict (or strongly recommended) image specifications. Amazon is the most prescriptive — wrong images get suppressed. eBay and Etsy are more flexible but still reward properly sized, high-quality photos with better placement in search results.

Fashion and Resale

Fashion resale platforms like Poshmark and Depop are photo-first shopping experiences. Buyers scroll through grids of product images, so your cover photo needs to stand out at small sizes. Both platforms use square crops for the grid view, making composition critical.

Storefronts

Shopify gives you full control over your store's image presentation. Unlike marketplaces, there are no strict background or composition rules — but Shopify's responsive themes crop images differently across devices, so consistent square product photos at high resolution work best.

Tips

  • Shoot at the highest resolution your camera allows and downscale for each platform. You can always make a big image smaller, but you cannot add detail to a small image.
  • Use a consistent lighting setup and background across all products in your shop. Visual consistency in grid views makes your store look professional and trustworthy.
  • For marketplaces that require white backgrounds (Amazon), shoot on white seamless paper and clean up in post. For lifestyle platforms (Etsy, Depop), styled flat lays and in-context shots outperform plain white backgrounds.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best product image size for Amazon?

Amazon recommends at least 2000 pixels on the longest side for the zoom feature to work, with a minimum of 1000 pixels. The main product image must have a pure white background (RGB 255,255,255) with the product filling at least 85% of the frame. Secondary images can show lifestyle context, dimensions, and packaging.

Do Poshmark and Depop use the same image sizes?

Both platforms prefer square images, but their recommended resolutions differ. Poshmark displays listing photos in a square grid and recommends high-resolution square images. Depop similarly uses a square grid layout. For both, shoot wide and crop to square, keeping the product centered.

How many product images should I upload per listing?

Upload the maximum number each platform allows. Amazon allows up to 9, Etsy allows 10, eBay allows 24, Shopify has no practical limit, and Poshmark allows up to 16. More images consistently correlate with higher conversion rates — show the product from every angle, in context, and with size references.
